“Not everybody can afford an in-ground pool, which is why we also carry top name above-ground pools as well,” says Calais co-owner Gary Barber.

Barber says he and his brother-in-law Murray Renner were inspired to open their Nanaimo store back in 1994, “because we wanted to run our own show and be our own bosses in a business that makes peoples lives both healthier and happier.”

With that in mind, Gary and Murray made the proper alliances with educational organizations and product suppliers “to achieve our goals.”

Fast forward to today and Calais has earned the reputation as Vancouver Island’s go-to place for Pools, Hot Tubs, Spas, Swim Spas, Saunas, and Exercise Trainers, as well as Billiard Tables, Darts supplies, and Home Entertainment equipment.

So whatever your vision and desires may be, new technologies and design elements will help bring down the bottom line of your personal oasis.

With that in mind, Barber is quick to point out that Calais carries top quality brands ”across the board.”

Besides increasing the value of your property, topping the list of benefits of a pool are good old-fashioned quality family (and friends) time.

“We call it the ‘stay-cation in your own back yard’.

“We are becoming the California of Canada,” Barber points out, adding “we don’t get three feet of snow for December/January like we used to, and we’re getting longer, hotter, summers now.”

A trend which has been scientifically proven, and will continue.

comox poolPool ownership and usage, says Barber, “is a lifestyle choice, and the older we get, the more we realize those benefits. t’s the social aspect in combination with the immense health benefits that make it such a great investment.”

Barber says saltwater pools are popular right now, “and we want to embrace that sector big time.”

The benefits of a saltwater system he says “is number one, there’s not as much handling and storage of chlorine and sanitizing chemicals, and secondly, is that it makes for a better swimming experience, which is increased bather comfort with less eye and skin irritation.”

Last but not least, is the convenience of salt water sanitizer systems.

To that end, Barber says he and Murray made the decision right out of the gate that they would only carry top quality equipment for their pools.

That decision has paid off, as “we have the ability to double customers standard manufacturer’s warranty’s. No one else on Vancouver Island can match this.”

Which is why he says it’s important to do business with someone that’s a member of The Pool & Hot Tub Council of Canada.

Not only is Calais a longstanding member of PHTCC, Barber is on its’ National board of directors and is the current president of its’ Island chapter.

In the big picture, the growth of pool installations world-wide has taken off over the past few years, and Canada leads the way. courtenay pools

Proof of that, Barber points out, can be seen in the stats from the big aqua show recently held in Lyon, France.

“Of the major countries entered, it is surprising to see that Canada is actually second in residential pools, per capita — only Argentina has more,” he said, pointing out Canada has approximately 1,200,000 residential pools, “which equates to one of every 29 residences has a pool!”

“So come see our team of industry experts and professionals,” Barber says to all those who have thought about taking the plunge. “We promise you a very pleasurable experience, and the highest level of industry related products, services and information.”
