Top Questions to Ask Before Buying a Hot Tub

Home / Uncategorized / Top Questions to Ask Before Buying a Hot Tub

So you’ve decided to take a plunge – into a hot tub, that is.

How do you decide which tub to buy and what to look for?
Knowing the right questions to ask can help you get a hot tub you will be happy with and enjoy many times.
The first question is one people often think of right away.

How much will it cost?
A good hot tub will run between $7,000 and $10,000.00 before tax. It includes room for three to seven people.
It should also cover delivery and set-up. There are other costs to consider such as a gravel or concrete base, the electrical hookup, chemicals and ongoing operational costs.

What is the Tub Construction and Circulation?
Most tubs are made of fiberglass backed acrylic and this is what you should look for as it makes a strong long lasting product.
The tub should be designed with enough horsepower to operate the number and size of jets.
Make sure you can easily get to the pumps and jets to repair them if needed.

Can I Try Before I Buy?

Bring a swimsuit to try out a hot tub before taking the plunge. Most dealers will have a hot tub running for customers to try. At the very least, sit in a dry tub so you get the feel of it and decide if it’s something you’re comfortable with.

What About the Warranty and After-Sale Service?
It’s important to ask whether the warranty is full or pro-rated. Does it cover parts, labour and travel to your home?  Does it start from the day of the sale or day of delivery?
Make sure you are aware of the warranty on the acrylic shell as it cannot be replaced.
Look for three years and up on pumps, heater and other components.
It’s very important the dealer has certified technicians on staff..

How Much Maintenance is Involved?
Maintenance is a do-it-yourself: weekly addition of chlorine to keep the water sanitary. It also involves regular balancing of pH, alkalinity and other levels, replacing the water every three or four months, and an annual flushing of water lines. A quick shower before going in the hot tub is a good idea. Please note tht creams, makeup and perfumes upset the water balance causing foam and cloudiness.
